Joanna Monks & Rosie Shepley

Specimens and Stone

11.07. – 13.07.2014

This exhibition presents the work undertaken by the artists during a four week residency at 66 Øvre Strandgate. As the culmination of the first residency in a series, Specimens and Stone provides a point to share the works in progress and for the artists to reflect on their projects before moving on to Tampere and Jyväskylä, Finland for their next residencies.

The work consists of video, sound, drawings and sculptural experiments, both collaborative and individual. Rosie Shepley explores cycles of growth and decay, and the decorative appropriation of nature. She reflects upon the presentation of specimens of nature within museum collections. Joanna Monks looks at the memory of place: the past visible through the present. Her works examine the tension between materials and their environment, and our relationship to these spaces.
