Michael Walde (b. 2002) graduated from the Stavanger School of Art in 2024. He is currently studying fine art at the Trondheim Academy of Fine Art.
This project explores the impersonal, distanced communication that occurs between a service worker and a customer. In these interactions, a relation marked by alienation and distance arises. What does it mean for our everyday interpersonal encounters when they take place within the framework of economic transactions? The institutional smile, which initially emerged as a way to create a personal customer experience, also becomes a compensation for the distance and discomfort that arises. As a service worker, one’s interactions with the outside world are restricted, and one is transformed from an individual into an extension of the employer’s economic interests. You by extension become a sales object and part of the shop’s inventory.

Studio17 is continuing the successful collaboration between the Stavanger School of Art, where one of the students graduating from the school is invited to have a solo exhibition at Studio17 during the upcoming autumn. In 2023 August Gjevik Hagen had their first solo exhibition at Studio17 in the framework of this collaborative project. The selection was then, as it is now, made based on the artistic quality of the work presented at the graduation exhibition of Stavanger School of Art.
This year it was dance artist, cultural manager, art consultant and new diretor of Rogaland Art Center Valentina Martinez Mariscal who chose Michael Walde from this years graduation exhibition «VEL VEL».
Stavanger School of Art is a higher vocational school that provides education in visual arts. For more info, please visit: https://kunstskolen.no.
